Day 21 | 20.05.2016: Award Ceremony, Facts & Figures about the Rally

After the award ceremony of the Allgäu-Orient Rallye 2016, where we finished in 4th place, it is time for us to look back on the rally. We functioned well as Judo goes Orient | Team #85. Over the past 4 weeks we experienced many wonderful things, enjoyed remarkable encounters with complete strangers in cultures that were partly unfamiliar to us. We distributed a great deal of aid supplies and in doing so made people happy — especially children — bringing a smile to their faces. What impressed us in all 12 countries we drove through was the tremendous willingness to help (for example when we asked for directions or broke down), the ever-present hospitality, and the spontaneous invitations to eat, drink, or even shower and sleep.

The following summary is intended to give an overview of our entire rally.

Aid supplies: In our three rally cars and the initial three trailers we transported a total of around 963 kg of aid supplies such as toys, soft toys, clothes, hygiene products, bicycles, school materials and other consumables. These aid supplies were distributed in Albania, Bulgaria, Turkey and Georgia.

Donations: In Albania we donated our 3 trailers plus a cheque worth CHF 3’333.- to the aid organisation VIZION O.J.F, with whom we visited the school in Bllice. We also donated a cheque worth CHF 3’333.- to the Maria-Luisa orphanage in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

Accidents and breakdowns: About an hour after crossing the border into Turkey we had a traffic accident with a slightly intoxicated Turkish driver. Our “Vroni” was badly damaged at the front right and had to be repaired. In the last two days, when we were travelling on off-road tracks, “Vroni” started having trouble and has been losing oil ever since through a faulty oil drain plug. “Wilma” suffered three flat tyres. Otherwise we were fortunately spared further breakdowns.

Kilometres driven: In total we drove 8’839 kilometres.

Fuel consumption: Over the entire route our rally cars consumed 3’200 litres of petrol, costing us approximately CHF 4’300.-.

Recovery: After the exhausting rally we recovered as a team over four days at a Turkish holiday resort in Fethiye.
