Allgäu-Orient Rally · 2020/2021

Judo goes Orient 2021

The rally for charitable aid

Second edition — and this time off their own bat: with the official rally postponed by the pandemic, Team #85 set off independently in May 2021. Over three and a half weeks and more than 7,000 kilometres, three scrapyard cars carried around three tonnes of aid to children's homes in Romania and Bulgaria — no motorways, all for a good cause.

Start / Finish Aid project Waypoint
A big Balkan loop from Wohlen: via Austria and Hungary to the children's homes in Romania (Piatra Neamț) and Bulgaria (Tryavna), down to the Aegean and on to the school project in Albania — then home through Montenegro and Bosnia.

The idea

Adventure with a purpose: travel as far as possible, as cheaply as possible, and do as much good as possible. Team #85 from Wohlen trains judo together — and poured that energy into a humanitarian rally towards the Orient, raising funds for children in Romania and Bulgaria before, during and after the trip.

The cars

Three identical BMW 530d Touring (E39) estates, all around 20 years old with 230,000–300,000 km on the clock, each rescued from the scrapyard for about a thousand francs. Named (Gloria, Selma, Alexa) and fitted with three trailers (two horse trailers and a cargo transporter) for the heavy load.

The aid projects

Aid was handed out all along the route: about two tonnes of supplies and €22,000 to the orphanage in Piatra Neamț (Romania, partner WKMS), roughly one tonne and €11,000 to the SOS Children's Village in Tryavna (Bulgaria), schoolbags and toys to the primary school in Bllice (Albania), and an emergency generator for a family in Tuzla (Bosnia) — over €30,000 and three tonnes of goods in total.
