Work Session at the Oase
This Saturday we put in another work session at the Oase. After the rather rough jobs at the last session, “finer” tasks were now planned. Over croissants and coffee we kicked off with a quick briefing. Our team leader Andi came straight from military service to the Oase and we talked through our goals. Said and done — and off we went with the noise.
Roger likes it loud! So he’s the first to grab the lawnmower and start mowing, followed by firing up the chainsaw. A tree is leaning at an angle on our roof and needs to come down. With a great deal of skill, creativity, and the support of Andi, Sepp, Lukas and a Habegger winch, we finally managed to bring the thuya tree to the ground and turn it into firewood.
Lukas put his DIY skills to use dismantling the washing machines. Unfortunately, skill and plenty of tools alone weren’t enough. Roger backed him up with some serious muscle power, which in combination led to success. Now you’re probably wondering why we’re doing this at all. No, we don’t want to open a plumbing business. The drums from the washing machines make excellent portable barbecue stations. That goes perfectly with the freshly cut firewood and with cosy evenings during the rally.
Dirty walls are fine in a workshop. On the quiet seat, we prefer things clean. Yanik didn’t waste any time, making sure every visitor to the Oase also has an oasis of peace in the toilet. He cleans and paints the bathroom walls clinical white so that everyone can feel comfortable.
Last but not least, we breathed new life into the barely glowing lights. With a cloth and clean water, Manuela was able to wipe away the millimetre-thick layer of dust and — lo and behold: “Let there be light.” After all, we want to be able to tinker with our vehicles at night too.
With dirty hands, mild exhaustion, and a good feeling, we treated ourselves to a well-earned beer and looked back over the work done.
