Hospitality at SOS Children's Villages Keeps Us in Tryavna for Another Day
Day 10: Tryavna (BG)
Wonderful beds at the SOS Children’s Village let us sleep in a little. Shortly after opening our eyes, we celebrate a Happy Birthday for our team member Yanik. Afterwards, the home management welcomes us with a delicious Bulgarian breakfast — Banitsa (a filled puff pastry with cheese) and a sour cream drink are a must, along with coffee. We chat and learn more interesting facts about the SOS Children’s Village in Tryavna from the management. The director then invites us to stay for another night in the children’s village.
We decide on the spot to explore this charming little town (a small town of 8’543 inhabitants) in daylight. We accompany our birthday boy Yanik as “king” through the town :-). The old-world town shows a great deal of charm and impressively historic buildings. Traditional crafts such as woodcarving, icon painting, architecture and textile crafts are very much part of this region. Cultural-historical excavations show that the settlement already existed in the era of the Thracians and Romans. During Ottoman rule, the townspeople guarded the mountain passes and thereby secured certain privileges for themselves.
Lunch was typically Bulgarian — filling our bellies or nearly making them burst. With a visit to the Museum of Woodcarving, shopping for fresh vegetables and a beer in the sunshine, we enjoyed the afternoon in town.
Today we are again accompanied by a real rally — the Orca Offroad Rallye — which takes place over three days in Tryavna. This time we again enter almost as non-competitors. Except that SELMA wants to prove herself and lands in a field just before the rally start. Together as a team we push her back onto the road — where she belongs :-).
Brief summary:
Day ten surprises us once again with the hospitality of the SOS Children’s Village, which we enjoy very much. The charming little town with its craftsmanship delights us just as much as the Bulgarian cuisine. Beautiful impressions and moments accompany us through the day.
