Montenegro's Niagara Falls
Day 21: Shengjin (AL) – Podgorica (MNE)
After another night at the Duna Camping in Shengjin we got up early, brewed a quick coffee and packed up our camp. Once we had loaded everything onto the rally cars and said goodbye to the campsite owner, we rolled off towards Montenegro.
About two hours of driving separates us from the Montenegrin border. Arriving at the border, leaving Albania proved straightforward. Entering Montenegro was slightly different. We were questioned closely about where we were coming from, where we were going, and whether we were transporting drugs. With SELMA and ALEXA, the doors even had to be opened so the customs officers could satisfy themselves with a sharp-eyed look that we were carrying no drugs. And with that we had the all-clear — Welcome to Montenegro.
Our destination is the capital, Podgorica. In search of a proper shower after a while, we find a lovely guesthouse run by Alexandra right in the heart of the city centre. After checking in, we head back out of the city to Montenegro’s Niagara Falls. Not quite as large as the real Niagara Falls, but just as impressive and beautiful is this waterfall.
We return to the city of Podgorica and set out on a walking tour of the sights. What awaits us is a beautiful, not-too-large city with some lovely architecture. In a beer garden with live music we quickly make contact with locals and enjoy a cold beer and a bite to eat.
Brief summary:
Day twenty-one shows us at the Montenegrin border that the customs officers are thorough in their search for drugs — though of course they find nothing on us. The drive through Montenegro’s landscape is very beautiful and lush. Montenegro’s Niagara Falls, the city of Podgorica, and the locals all paint us a wonderful picture of Montenegro.
