Straight through Bosnia and Herzegovina to Tuzla…

Day 23: Mostar (BIH) – Tuzla (BIH)

After breakfast at the «Nerveta» campsite we drive into the old town of Mostar and visit the old stone bridge from 1566, built by the Ottoman Sultan Süleyman I and today listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Each year, during the Red Bull event, the world’s best cliff divers leap from this bridge from a height of around 30 metres into the cold depths of the river Merveta.

Today’s drive takes us along the river Merveta towards Sarajevo and on to Tuzla. A hilly, winding road accompanies us all day until we reach Tuzla. The area around Tuzla reveals itself as a mining region where coal is extracted on a large scale, powering 11 coal-fired power stations. In dry weather, the wind carries the toxic and harmful emissions from the power plants right into the centre of Tuzla.

In the Tuzla region we look for a good spot for our overnight camp near the «Modrac Lake». In this area around the lake a sizeable Roma community lives, which makes the surroundings feel relatively unsafe to us. After a brief discussion we decide to drive to the Ontario campsite on Lake «Jezero Bistarac». No sooner have we arrived than our «wagon circle» is set up and we are all busy preparing tonight’s dinner: Älpler-Macaroni.

Brief summary:

Day twenty-three starts with a visit to the old town of Mostar and the ancient stone bridge from 1566, after which we drive straight across Bosnia and Herzegovina all the way to Tuzla. Our overnight camp is set up at the idyllic Lake «Jezero Bistarac» and the wonderful smell of Älpler-Macaroni is already in the air. Bon appétit.
